Yummm...Donuts! Weber's Little Donut Shop
Who doesn’t love a good donut? When I was little, I used to think a donut from Dunkin was a treat. Now that I have “matured” it takes a lot more than Dunkin Donuts to satisfy me when it comes to my donuts. In December, I discovered Weber’s, and I now have a donut spot on the island that I’m really pumped about! They are going to celebrate their first anniversary this week, and you have to go check them out on your next St. George Island vacation!
I asked Layla Weber to tell me a little about their story. Their story is below…
Weber’s Little Donut Shop was originally started in 2012 by my in-law’s, George and Betty Weber. When Dad told us that they were going to open a donut shop on Cape San Blas, we thought he was crazy because they had never made donuts before. They got the shop up and running and gathered quite a following.
After much success on Cape San Blas, Dad thought St George Island would be a great place for us to open a Weber’s Little Donut Shop. (Mom and Dad are retired now, but their son Glenn and his wife, Peggy, are at the Cape San Blas location. You can check out the Cape San Blas Facebook page here.) While we were intrigued by the idea, we were living in Ohio. George (my husband) was self-employed and built aquarium filters out of acrylic, and I worked at a grocery store - a job that I loved. While George is a great cook and I have always loved baking, we had never made donuts. Dad found a place for a shop on St George Island and started working on getting it ready. We still didn’t know if we were ready, but the opportunity presented itself, and we decided it was time to do something for ourselves. (Our kids are adults, so we didn’t have to worry about them.) George came to Florida first to learn how to make donuts, and I followed a week after. We officially opened Weber’s Little Donut Shop - St George Island on April 4, 2017. All of our cake donuts are made fresh daily. Our donuts are yellow cake, but we sometimes make blueberry, chocolate or old fashioned sour cream donuts. Our donut varieties change daily, some we do every day, some every once in awhile. I’ve always loved celebrating the holidays, no matter how big or small. I try to incorporate the holidays into donuts and sometimes they end up being a part of the regular menu.
Like I said before, I didn’t discover Weber’s until December, but man am I happy I finally found it! I took my buddy Adam to Weber’s. I got the Fruity Pebbles donut (because I’m really just a big kid) and Adam had the maple donut. I could have eaten at least three of those Fruity Pebble pillows of dough!
Adam said he really loved the maple donut too.
I couldn’t wait to take Krista to my newly found gem on St. George Island. Krista and I went back to Weber’s on our Christmas vacation. This time I had the cinnamon-sugar donut, and, again, it was delicious!
Weber’s little donut shop is located at 65 W Gorrie Dr. (attached the small Catholic church) near the middle of the island and across the street from the Blue Parrot. Weber’s is open Tuesday-Saturday 7:30-11:00 am or until they sell out (which happens often!). Make sure you bring cash (they don’t take credit card) and get there early for the best selection!
